Marble Valley School is proud of its exceptional faculty and staff, dedicated to providing a respectful, enthusiastic learning environment. Our teachers are dedicated to educating the whole child and discovering the excellence in every child. Small class sizes are a priority at Marble Valley in order to give students optimal individual attention and guidance. In kindergarten through 6th grade, our classes are kept at approximately 20 students. For Jr. High, core academics classes average about 24.

MVS StudentAt the base of Marble Valley School is strong, challenging academics.  Our students continue to score more than 20 percentile points higher on standardized testing as compared to surrounding schools and national averages. Academics is supplemented with an arts program that highlights visual and performing arts, as well as athletics, fine arts, drama, ceramics and music. Rising 7th grade students have already been exposed to Spanish as well as opportunities for Latin and German.

Individual attention is also a crucial element of Marble Valley School. Opportunities for students to meet with their teachers one–on-one are built into the weekly routine. This teaches responsibility as well as critical thinking to our students. Teachers at MVS constantly are asking core questions: Are students developing as whole persons? Are they becoming respectful, compassionate individuals? Are they developing a broad range of interests and sympathies?

Miss A GradsIntegrated enrichment opportunities are emphasized through history, art music and cultures come together in a colorful learning experience through spiral curriculum. Character education is reinforced with the various programs which emphasize the development of kindness, responsibility, respect, honesty and service through guest speakers, role-playing activities, community service and on-going discussions.

About Us

An Environment That Nurtures Creativity

Our Mission

Engaged Learners "We don't know what the world will look like for our children in 15 years, or even 5 years. We don't know what our children will choose for their professions, where they will go to college, where they will live. There is really no way to anticipate every one of their specific future educational needs. So how can we make sure we are giving our child the education he or she needs?

By educating the whole child.

Knowledge itself can become outdated, computers are replaced, and new books are written. We believe in creating a life-long passion to learn. Each student needs to discover how he or she learns best. Thus, no matter what comes their way, they will be able to confidently meet the challenges of life and find success and practice this to perfection. This is one of our most important missions at Marble Valley School."

"MVS is dedicated to 'Discovering the Excellence in Every Child'. Our philosophy is based on the progressive developmental learning theory of Howard Gardiner, which acknowledges that children learn differently and at their own pace. We believe in meeting a child at their current level of development, discovering how they learn, and challenging them to move forward in all areas of learning. In educating the whole child our students leave our school better prepared to face the world and it's challenges. They are life-long learners who face challenges with confidence and are armed with the academic tools needed to follow whatever path they may choose to take in life."

Gardiner's Multiple Intelligences

Howard Gardner"It's a revolutionary idea, and if it was taken seriously, schools would be a very different kind of place. In fact, most places, either for ideological reasons or for financial reasons, or because they've never thought about it, treat everyone in the same way, and teach them in the same way. And they think they've treated everybody fairly, but in fact, its exactly the opposite, because if school is directed at one kind of mind, but in fact there are hundreds of different kinds of minds, in fact it is prejudiced in favor of the one kind of 'scholastic' mind, and against the dozens of 'non-scholastic' minds."

- Howard Gardiner

Bodily-Kinesthetic Kinesthetic
These people have keen body awareness. They like physical movement, hugging, dancing, making and inventing things with their hands, and role-playing. They communicate well through body language and other physical gestures. They can often perform a task only after seeing someone else do it. They generally like physical games of all kinds and demonstrating how to do something. They find it difficult to sit still for a long time and are easily bored if they are not actively involved in what is going on around them. Kristi Yamaguchi is strong in this intelligence.
Intrapersonal Intrapersonal
These people often like to work alone. They are self-reflective and self-aware and thus tend to be in tune with their inner feelings, values, beliefs, and thinking processes. They are frequently bearers of creative wisdom and insight, are highly intuitive, and are inwardly motivated rather than needing external rewards to keep them going. They are often strong-willed, self-confident, and have definite, well-thought-out opinions on almost any issue. Other people will often come to them for advice and counsel. Emily Dickinson was strong in this intelligence.
Interpersonal Interpersonal
These people learn through person-to-person interaction. They generally have lots of friends, show a great deal of empathy for other people and understanding different points of view. They love team activities of all kinds and are very good team members, pulling their own weight and often much more. They like to collect items from nature, study them, and group them. They tend to be aware of subtleties in appearance, texture, and sounds that those weaker in this intelligence may not grasp. George Washington Carver was strong in this intelligence.
Logical-Mathematical Logical

They like to experiment, solve puzzles and other problems, ask cosmic questions, and think. They generally enjoy working with numbers and mathematical formulas and operations. They love the challenge of complex problems to solve. They tend to be systematic and analytical, and they always have a logical rationale or argument for what they are doing or thinking. Albert Einstein was strong in this intelligence.

These people love music and rhythmic patterns. They are very sensitive to sounds in the environment such as the chirp of a cricket or rain on the roof. They can often reproduce a melody or rhythmic pattern after hearing it only once. Various sounds, tones, and rhythms may have a visible effect on them. For example, you can see a change in facial expressions, body movement, or emotional responses. They like to create music. They enjoy singing and listening to a wide variety of music. They are often quite skilled at mimicking sounds, language accents, others' speech patterns, and recognizing different musical instruments in a composition. Paul McCartney is strong in this intelligence.

Targeted Attention at Every Age and Level

Preschool

Marble Valley Preschool strives to inspire each child's natural creativity and imagination while helping them to build social skills, learn self control, work in a group setting, and develop new academic skills while amplifying natural talents and abilities.  As your child develops physically and intellectually, we want them to build confidence and self esteem and have the freedom to enjoy being a child.  Daily activities available to your child include: Art, Music, Imaginative play, Star Stage, Story time, Touch and learn, Science center, Teaching toys, Outside play, Little schoolhouse, Counting, Little library, and Circle time

Pre-Kindergarten

At Marble Valley, we hope to help your Pre-K child start that lifetime of learning with an experience that will give him or her a love of learning.  We feel that Pre-K is a time of wonder, excitement and curiosity that should be fostered and cherished.

Children choose activities in math, writing, reading, motor skills, social development and creative expression that capture their interests, allow them to test their ideas, and encourage growth, wellness, and understanding.  Teachers help guide the students to their next developmental stage with love and gentle guidance.

Kindergarten

We hope to accomplish our goal by allowing children to be children.  A kindergarten-age childe is constantly discovering and learning new things through play and free exploration.  They are also experiencing the fun of learning how to be a student, which involves learning how to follow directions, exploring the boundaries of a classroom, and engaging in the joys of their world.  In addition to academics, kindergarten classrooms are a place where children continue to learn socialization and cooperative learning skills.

Grades 1-8

The Marble Valley curriculum combines the national and state academic standards with the standards for cultural literacy, setting the stage for thorough, meaningful instruction.  We expect each child to make the minimum of one years progress in a school year in every subject.  However, our experience is children accomplish far more in the right learning environment.

School Uniform

Students at Marble Valley School wear a specific uniform. Dressing in a uniform each day subconsciously reminds a student that he/she is preparing for school. As the children arrive at school, they see their schoolmates in uniform and are reminded that they are part of the learning and growing team at Marble Valley School. Some may say that a specific dress code denies a child the opportunity for self-expression through clothing choices. Although this is definitely an arguable point, here, at Marble Valley School we choose to encourage a child’s self-expression through learning activities.

For a complete list of uniform requirements and purchasing information go to www.dennisuniform.com. Dennis Uniform is located at 9500 Micron Ave., Suite 110, Sacramento, CA 95827. Their phone number is 916-361-6710.

Test Results
Test week is exciting at Marble Valley School. Teachers and students look forward to the chance to demonstrate their academic competence on a standardized test. Local public schools have a general composite score between the 60th and 70th percentile. In the 2003-04 year our students scored well above the 80th percentile.

Reading: 89th percentile
Language: 88th percentile
Math: 89th percentile

These high scores are not achieved by daily drill. Rather they are a by-product of our teaching methods. These scores, in addition to several other assessments, demonstrate our Marble Valley approach to learning really works.

Classroom Results

Our developmental program made possible by our incredible staff and small class size (18 max) allows children to explore and experience their environment. They look for cause and effect relationships, test new ideas and abilities, receive authentic feedback and synthesize new thoughts with earlier learning. When a child is taught in this exploratory way, the concepts become much clearer due to the fact that they have had the chance to gather information cognitively, emotionally, physically and socially. Concepts are revisited over the course of many years, allowing students to apply new understanding and draw deeper conclusions. This spiraling curriculum reinforces learning and extends cultural literacy.

We are a learning and caring community.

  • We are all readers.

  • We are all writers.

  • We solve problems and develop logic as we study mathematics.

  • Science helps us understand our physical world.

  • Social Studies helps us understand ourselves and others who live or have lived on our planet.

  • We develop and care for our physical bodies so we can contribute to and enjoy life.

  • We express ourselves and understand our world through music, dance, drama, and visual arts.

Kindergarten Example

A new kindergartner discovered that his name had been written on a piece of paper and taped to a cubby where he could keep his backpack and snack. Later, when he needed to write his name on a paper, but couldn’t remember exactly how his name looked, he returned to the cubby and collected his name letter by letter, walking back and forth each time until he completed the task. Within three weeks he was able to write his name unaided. The casual observer might wonder if this was the most efficient way for him to learn to write his name. However, in a developmental school we see that he has discovered a need to write his name, found a way to complete the task and carried out all the steps needed to accomplish his goal. It is wonderful that he can now write his name, but it is just as wonderful that he has been able to find a method that allowed him to reach his goal within a classroom environment that displayed his name and gave him the freedom to work in his own way. He has been successful on two levels in a classroom that respects his learning process.

2nd Grade Example

A second grade student had just finished reading a Ramona book by Beverly Cleary. She had been assigned a project to show her understanding of the character’s motivation for her actions. The problem, as the child explained it, was that she didn’t understand why the character did the things she did in the book. Her teacher suggested she act out a chapter and see if it helped her understand Ramona. The student tried this and found that she really related to Ramona after all. She took her learning to the next level by filming a video tape where she played the part of Ramona and presented this film to the class. She was not only able to understand the character, but during her presentation she was able to help her classmates relate to the character also.

5th Grade Example

A few days ago in a 5th grade classroom, students were learning the concepts of density, mass, and buoyancy. Instead of worksheets and abstract explanations, each child had a small gourd. As they weighed, measured and dropped their gourds in a tub of water, they solidified the definitions while doing something concrete. The abstract became concrete. The unknown became their own.

We believe that it is essential that students learn to be 100% responsible for their own education. We prefer our parents in the role of supporting and encouraging, not tutoring and nagging.

Students can expect to have no more than 10 minutes of homework per grade per night (1st grade - 10 minutes, 2nd grade - 20 minutes and so on) in addition to 20 minutes of self-selected reading.
